Computer Games Magazine, issue #117, 08/2000 ← Return to Table

Lucky issue number 117. I'm really excited about uploading this magazine here because I haven't been able to found any scans of it whatsoever online bar just the cover. This magazine was released just two months after Microsoft's acquisition of Bungie, then turning Halo into Xbox's launch title, but the magazine still speaks of Halo as being a PC exclusive. "Bungie develops all of their games (including Halo) for release on both the Mac and PC, and they have started to dabble in the console Market..." right, right, and "...Bungie has never produced a bad game. It's entirely possible that Halo could be their first... but would you bet on it?" Love reading back on quotes like this knowing what happens. There are a few pictures here featuring cut content, that is the Spectre (later put added in Halo 2) and the wildlife, which the animal in the picture on page 3 is called the Thornbeast. It's interesting stuff. There are pictures of Master Chief in both his 1999 Mark armor design and what would be the 2001 Mark V design, and images of the original Elite designs as well as their 2001 counterparts. I always liked the original '99 Elite designs, a bit silly looking now compared to their later looks but still something cool and unique. This actually prompted me to go back and look at the 2000 E3 trailer, you should too! It also is when Halo was still being developed for the PC. That Master Chief voice acting! Someone in the comments mentioned it sounded like voice acting for RvB. The wildlife! The Elite sounds! The graphics and the look of the Forerunner structure! Master Chief's aura walk near the end. The "something ain't right here" has made me think of how the Flood might've looked like in the early iterations of Halo. I think I digress... it's an interesting magazine to read and look back on when thinking about the early history of Halo.
